Hello everyone. I hope you guys have had a great beginning to your September. I have been working on a few ideas for National Hispanic Heritage Month. I really want to start incorporating more about my country and my culture. So keep an eye out for that. Today though I want to talk to you guys about something that it is very important, personality traits.
Growing up if you were a certain way your parents would assume that was just how you were. Then we start to believe that your current personality traits are “just how you are.” We say this as if we had no control over how we acted. Then we begin to have assumptions that if we don’t have certain traits for success then we are destined to not be successful. As if successful people were predetermined by the universe. I am a strong believer that you are created as a blank canvas. We begin to develop our personality traits as our environment develops. This is great news because if you feel you have a personality trait you are not too crazy about you have the control to change it. It is not just the way you are.
So how do we acquire good personality traits?
1. You have determine what traits you want to acquire and what traits really go with your character or what you would like your character to be.
2. Determine what kind of habits people with these traits have
3. Start incorporating them into your routine. Habits after time become who you are. They become your trait as a person. Habits you gain become who you are as well as habits you drop stop being part of your identity. You have to understand that this is not an overnight acquisition but instead a lifelong process.
Remember: Anything in life has a solution except death. So as long as you are breathing you have a chance for success.
The following personality traits are traits I have personality seen that work for successful people and people with influence and making a difference..
In anything you want to do in life you have to understand what it is you want to accomplish and then be driven to actually reach it. Because guess what? Success is not going to come over night. It won’t come in a month. Doors will most likely start to open after years of grind. Which is to be honest something that people struggle with specially now with social media. We are only fed high of people’s lives so we are tricked to think success comes easy and fast. which leads me to the next trait which is patience
You have to understand that patients is a big part of success. Jeff Bezos, the founder of amazon, had to be patient for years to see a profit. Amazon actually lost money the first years they went public. Now amazon is taking over so many markets. Remember that next time you feel the progress or success is not coming fast enough, be patient!
People that are successful do things that other’s are not willing to do. That is why successful people are scares in the greater scheme of things. So many times we want to punish the 1% but the 1% is willing to do things we are not. If we all had the guts to do things that scare us we would all be successful. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Successful people act courageous. They do things despite their fears. Being scared is normal but you have to be able to act and move forward despite your fears.
I know it seems like loyalty has nothing to do with business and success but it does. In order to be successful you need to create connections. No one wants to do business or make connection with someone that is uncapable to be honest and loyal. Showing loyalty is what will make people want to introduce you to their own connections and business partners. People that function with unloyalty will eventually fall on their sword. Don’t forget that.
This goes along with the last trait. If you want a following. Real business connections you have to be genuine. People will always see through someone that is not genuine. Don’t try to be something you are not! Stay true to yourself even if at first you are not the popular opinion.
Before you start eliminating yourself out the game based on this trait hear me out. Lets start by redefining what confidence is in success. People have always assumed that confidence is one of two things. One, that people are born with this trait. Two, that people with confidence are confident because they know everything. Both perceptions are wrong. If successful people are the first to say they don’t know and they are always in search for knowledge. Then the notion that confidence means you know everything is wrong. We also know people that go through tough times with confidence then later in life find their way to confidence so we are not born with it. Confidence is the trust in yourself to figure things out. If you are willing to figure things out you will always find a way and that my friends is confidence in yourself.
So many people listen to respond instead of listening to understand. Being a good listener is a trait that people really don’t talk about but man this trait is so important. The pure act of listening can help you close deals, get clients, and get further in life. When you stop and listen to who you are trying to win over you will seems more likeable. People don’t remember what you said, they remember how you made them feel. When you listen you know what not to say. If a person is vocal about something they don’t like you know what not to focus on when trying to sell an idea or product. Lastly, if you just listen you will know what people are looking for. It is as simple as that.
Now I know that not everyone plays nice. You speak to someone working in wall street they will tell you the hell with being empathetic and kind. However, what people don’t understand is that being empathetic is the beginning of all businesses. You need to have the ability to place yourself in someone else’s shoes and figure out a problem they may have and solve it. I have always said, “companies’ rise and fall is based on customer service.” Your ability to place yourself in your customer’s shoes will show how long you will be in business. Think about it, people become loyal to places that make them feel good. Those places have the ability to say, “what is it that our customers want? what do they think they need? And how can we deliver that to them?” That goes for leaders and their employees as well. Be empathetic to others and you will see your possibilities open.
I think this one is obvious. If you want to be the one people call for business, people need to know you will be there and deliver.
10. Self- Discipline
I know this one is hard especially if you are at the beginning stages of something and it is just you on the grind. No one is there to hold you accountable so it is easy to not do things. However, if you want to reach success you need to hold yourself accountable and do what needs to be done even when you don’t feel like it, or when no one is watching. I am not going to front with you guys, this is something I had to work on when starting this journey of blogging. I have always been someone that does well at work because I was able to compare myself and my performance against someone else’s. I would say, ” okay, who has the best performance in here and I will be ten times better than that.” However, now I have learned something so amazing. I need to compete with what I did yesterday. I need to be better than yesterday’s version of myself. Which I think is the whole point of life. We have to progress, love, and challenge ourselves.
Working towards these traits will change the way you do things and it will make your success last the test of time. Don’t chase highs with easy fixes of success. Have a firm foundation of your character, your traits, and your habits and success will last. Remember, you can do this!
Leadership consists not in degrees of techniques but in traits of character; it requires moral rather than athletic or intellectual effort, and it imposes on both leader and follower alike the burden of self-restraint.
