Not having the resources to set them up to heal and progress only effects the generations that come after. Which is why I have decided to go out and interview Latinos. My hope is to find the three perspectives that exist in this issue of mental health.
*The one of the immigrant
*The medical field
*The children it effects.
Really understanding what an immigrant goes through when coming to a new country. The struggles of leaving family behind, surrounded by a new environment and a new language is important. We must learn and understand how cultural shock can effect one’s state of mind.
Psychologist I feel need to better understand the cultural differences between them and their patients. So they can better help those that put their trust in their care.
We must give young adults, children of immigrants, the tools to better discuss this very traumatic experience their parents go through. Many times parents keep these types of events from their children. However, I feel the more we discuss it, the more we will be able to advocate for resources for the immigrant community.
I speak on the troubles Latinos face when it comes to mental health in my blog https://betteryouspace.com/2018/10/13/mental-heath-in-latinos/ if you would like to check it out.
I know that I am embarking on a very big and important subject, which is why I would like to ask for your help. If you know of anyone that is an immigrant or a child of an immigrant please feel free to email me. My email is in the contact section. I would like to interview you and get your perspective. You will be completely anonymous. I am working on trying to get the questions up in my blog so you can just hit a link and fill it out. When I have that ready for you I will let you know.
With these interviews I also want to better understand what matters to Latinos. What causes you to get stuck and how I can better motivate you. So if you are a Latino that enjoys getting motivated I have a section dedicated to that in my Instagram. I put up quotes and videos every Saturday if you would like to check it out. http://instagram.com/lupita_betteryouspace
I am excited for you to see the updates on this study and I am inspired to motivate my people. I want to be able to connect with my roots and open up about my own experience as an immigrant. How that has shaped who I am today and how it has helped me become a better person.
If there is something that you have been wanting to dive in to, go for it! I know it may be scary but I promise you it will be worth it. Remember, you can do this!
